Open Hands Backpack Program
The backpack program is both a national and a local effort to provide food for needy children on weekends when they do not have access to the free or reduced cost lunches provided at the schools. Through this program two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, snacks and milk are sent home in their backpacks on Friday afternoon. The Open Hands Program is a partnership between Christiansburg Primary and Elementary Schools the theBridge Foursquare Church and local community businesses. Through this partnership over 140+ bags of food are distributed each week to needy children during the school year. During extended break periods for the summers and holidays, boxes of food are provided to the families of the children.
Feedback from school officials testify to the impact the program is having in eliminating a previous concern with children showing up hungry on Monday mornings or showing signs of poor concentration. Added to this are the comments from the recipient families to the importance of this program in helping them cope during difficult times
How can you get involved? There are many ministry opportunities each week from picking up food from donors, packing bags & boxes, delivering to schools, donating financially and simply praying for the families of our community!
